Laurentiu Turic
Professor Laurentiu Turic has suddenly disappeared from our world on August 22-nd 1999, after only 61 life years, of which 39 he has generously offered to the technical academic activity.
Son of a teacher, he was educated in the respect for work, honesty, manhood and strength of character, features that characterised his whole activity.
He was born on January the 31-st in Hudesti, county Botosani, where he graduated 7 years of elementary school. He graduated high school in Dorohoi with excellent results and, in 1954 he entered the Electrical Engineering Faculty of Iasi. After graduating university in 1959 he had to work for one year at the Chemical Works Borzesti, due to the regulations at that time, to be able, afterwards, to become a laboratory co-ordinator at the Iasi Polytechnic Institute.
He begun his teaching activity in 1962 after winning a contest for a teaching assistant position at the Electrical Engineering Faculty of Iasi. He climbed all steps of the academic hierarchy, being a lecturer in 1966, an assistant professor in 1973 and a professor in 1990.
The whole academic activity of professor Laurentiu Turic proved his excellent qualities of a teacher and a mentor, permanently combining competence with exigency, as well as theoretic rigor with practical exercise. His contribution was fundamental to the founding of the Electronics Section of the Electrical Engineering Faculty of Iasi.
For a long time he was the chief of the Applied Electronics Chair, position that allowed him to develop, step by step, the nowadays Electronics and Telecommunications Faculty, especially by his exceptional activity in selecting and growing younger academic staff.
In parallel with his academic and managerial activity, professor Laurentiu Turic sustained an intense scientific activity. His PhD thesis was defended on the 2-nd of March, 1971. He was a Fulbright scholar for one year at the Urbana-Champain University of Illinois, USA. He published over 50 scientific papers, three laboratory books and two monographs.
Exceptional teacher and elite researcher, professor Laurentiu Turic was, in the first place a great man, friend and colleague. His high moral standards, avoidance of all compromises, friendship up to self-sacrifice are features characterising his whole activity in both university and beyond. <> Looking back on the life and activity of professor Laurentiu Turic, we must conclude that they represent a model to be followed by younger generations, that, we are convinced, will forever praise his memory.
