In 1896, in Leipzig, Paul Lochman had the excellent idea of replacing
the pin reel with a metallic pin disk. As disks were easier to replace,
his invention determined an intensive production of all kinds of instruments
of indoors mechanical music. In Leipzig , he founded Fabrik LOCHMANNSCHER
MUSIKWERKE A.G. Music boxes with replaceable disks, as designed by
him, were entitled SYMPHONIONS. In 1890, Paul Riesner and Gustav Brachhausen,
former employees of Paul Lochmann's, founded their own factory, named
POLYPHON, in Wahren, close to Leipzig. In Germany there appeared then
other factories, such as: Kalliope, Adler, Komet, Fortuna, Lochmann
- Original - Im perator, Orphenion.
The 19th
century was the period of technical progress. Once the reeds were
created, the variety of instruments becomes unbelievable. The organettes
were cheaper and the repertory increased continuously given the new
techniques (perforated cardboard, paper and sometimes metal). This
period produced great variety of organs with reeds controled by perforated
disks of cardboard or metal, named Ariston, Intona, Amorette etc.
Many of the disks in the museum collection contain Romanian songs.
